iPhone 6 To Launch On September 9th?

After months and months (years, even) of speculation, it seems we now know when Apple will finally unveil the iPhone 6 to the masses. Thanks to Re/code, we know that Apple is planning to host a big-time media event on Tuesday, September 9th. And just what will they be unveiling at the big reveal? Well, if history has anything to say about it, they’ll be revealing the newest model(s) of the iPhone. In years past, Apple has chosen the month of September to officially reveal the newest iPhones, and then to make them available to everyone for purchase about 10 days later. If this theory holds out, people could have their own iPhone 6 on September 19th of this year.

This could potentially be Apple’s biggest iPhone unveiling yet, as they are rumored to be offering 2 different models this year which will finally offer a substantial screen-size increase. If the rumors are true (and they are most likely true), there will be a 4.7 inch model, and a 5.5 inch model which will supposedly have higher-end specs (maybe a sapphire screen!) than its little brother. Each of the phones will operate on Apple’s yet-to-be-released iOS 8, which they also promise will turn out to be another game changer.

Indian Telcos Want to Suppress WhatsApp Even if Consumers Suffer

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) apparently wants to try wringing money out of messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Viber, Skype and WeChat on behalf of itself and mobile service providers who feel that they have the right to be compensated for revenues lost when people use such apps instead of making phone calls and sending SMS messages.
This is the same sort of logic that leads certain countries and municipalities to impose taxes on home solar panels because local coal-fired power plants are losing business.
One issue here is that service providers are banding together to try to extract more money than they already get because they sense an easy target. Another is that they're trying to use a neutral government agency to "regulate" their own competition. More importantly, the ideal of network neutrality is now under threat, because certain services might be burdened with some sort of tax or fee just for the privilege of being able to conduct business as usual.
Trai's plans are similar to recent moves by Internet service providers in the USA to lobby for the ability to set up Internet "fast lanes" and charge those companies able (if not willing) to pay more for priority (read: non-degraded) consumer experiences. Web startups and smaller companies would have a tough time surviving if they had to pay ISPs in order for consumers to be able to use them - regardless of the fact that ISPs are already being paid fees by users who should be able to use their bandwidth quotas in any way they like.
There's no question that handing service providers the ability to throttle certain services is bad for everyone involved - Internet users, entrepreneurs, and the tech economy as a whole. We need to be even more concerned that these service providers are trying to put themselves in a position of power over their competitors. Yes, long-distance telephony revenue has fallen thanks to VoIP, and people send fewer SMS messages because free Web messengers are available. So what? Business landscapes change all the time.
Everyone needs to adapt, not cling to the past. Cellular operators are not expected to compensate landline phone companies for the reduced usage of public pay-phones. Besides, the operators don't provide 2G/ 3G connectivity for free; there are monthly charges as well as data usage charges, and they aren't particularly fast, reliable or cheap.
Internet service providers and mobile operators create and maintain the pipes through which data flows, and they are paid not only by subscribers but also by content delivery networks which are widely used throughout the industry. The kind of data flowing through these pipes, its origins, destinations and relative proportions, are of no concern to them. They cannot be allowed to pick and choose who or what should get privileged carriage based on their own competitive interests.
Messenger apps have not replaced SMS entirely. People chat more via WhatsApp than they ever would have over SMS alone. There is no question of creating a "level playing field", as the mobile operators seem to be couching their argument. In fact by creating privileged levels of access to data transmission services they are actively creating a non-level field and stifling new innovations and developments that are of benefit to billions of people around the world.
If this proposal fails, there will be more complaints about messaging apps in order to demand "regulations" (and inevitably, scare tactics such as invoking the bogeys of terrorism, piracy, national security threats, pornography and who-knows-what-else will be used). It's now up to the Trai to ensure that ordinary users are not harmed and that the Indian tech business environment is not compromised by misguided policies.

Micromax Replaces Samsung as Largest Mobile Phone Vendor in India: Report

According to a recent report by a market research firm, Micromax has replaced Samsung to become the leading mobile phone vendor in the country in terms of market share. It has also become the second largest smartphone vendor in India behind Samsung.
Counterpoint, a technology market research firm, finds that Micromax with a 16.6 percent market share has overtaken Samsung (14.4 percent) as the largest mobile phone supplier in Q2 2014. Micromax and Samsung were closely followed by Nokia (10.9 percent), Karbonn (9.5 percent), and Lava (5.6 percent).
The research also revealed that Micromax replaced Nokia for the first time to become the leading feature phone supplier. According to the feature phone shipment data published, Micromax topped the charts with a 15.2 percent share followed by Nokia (now operated by Microsoft) with 14.7 percent. Other handset manufacturers following Micromax and Nokia in the feature phone segment were Karbonn (11.4 percent), Samsung (8.5 percent), and Lava (7.3 percent).
Counterpoint also reports that Micromax with a 19.1 percent share is now the second largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments, closely following Samsung (25.3 percent). Meanwhile, Lava (5.9 percent), Motorola (4.3 percent), and Nokia (4 percent) are other top smartphone brands of the country.
Neil Shah of Counterpoint notes, "Micromax has widened the gap with the third largest smartphone player as the race for the third place is up for grabs with fierce competition between Karbonn, Motorola, Celkon, Nokia, Apple and Sony."
"This is the vendor which mobile industry will have to keep an eye on as it expands beyond domestic markets. Globally, Micromax also jumped up the rankings becoming the tenth largest handset brand in terms of mobile phone shipment volumes," added Shah.
Some of the other findings of the market research revealed that Indian mobile phone market grew by 2 percent annually. The smartphone segment, on the other hand, grew an impressive 68 percent annually, while the demand for feature phones dropped to 16 percent annually in Q2, noted Counterpoint.
Shah also said, "The surprise performance was from Motorola thanks to its attractive but leaner portfolio of Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and go-to-market strategy. The brand which could soon be part of Lenovo has built a strong base in the high volume India smartphone market, entering the top five rankings surpassing Nokia, Apple, Sony and others."
Market research company Canalys last week reported that Motorola overtook Nokia to become the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in India in terms of units shipped in the quarter-ended June.
The market research firm also speculated that the Indian market will see intense competition thanks to the entry of some popular Asian smartphone brands in the country.
Xiaomi is already seeing an impressive response to launch of its first Mi 3 smartphone in the country.Asus, on the other hand, created a buzz in the market last month with its all new ZenFone smartphone series being launched in India at aggressive pricing.
"However, these brands will have to work hard on their brand awareness, distribution and service network to continue the growth beyond the early spike in demand in this very important mobile phone market," further Shah added.

Raspbery Pi Model B+ Released

The Raspberry Pi foundation has recently released a new version of its really small and adaptable computer, this week.  This is the third model of the device, which includes USB ports for input devices (keyboard and mouse), an SD card slot, an Ethernet port and an HDMI port to enable connection to a monitor or a TV.

Raspberry Pi Model B+ Was Released This Week
Raspberry Pi Model B+ coud be the last model using the current design.
The Raspberry Pi Model B+ is now the third released version of the credit-card sized computer.  The computer has sold 3m units since launch back in 2012.  The computer runs a variant of the free and open-source operating system, Linux.
The new board is the same cost $35 (£20) as the original model, but has two more USB ports, thereby making the total to four, a microSD card slot for memory and a more compact (if that was even possible) and neat design.  The general consensus for this redesign is because it will make fitting the board into custom projects and Raspberry Pi cases easier.
In a recent blog post, Raspberry Pi founder Eben Upton noted “In the two years since we launched the current Raspberry Pi Model B, we’ve often talked about our intention to do one more hardware revision to incorporate the numerous small improvements people have been asking for.”
This new board also lowers the power consumption.  This should make battery-powered projects easier, whilst improving the audio output quality and also adding more possibilities for expansion with add-on hardware, like cameras.
The original Model B board will remain available to buy, while the new B+ model computer is described as “the final evolution of the original Raspberry Pi.” This indicates a completely new Raspberry Pi design could be on the way.

Five of the Best Alternative Email Clients for iOS

Email_apps_iOS_storyimage.jpg

Also Read If You Use Facebook At All, You’ve Been Experimented On

You might WhatsApp your friends, but email is still the preferred mode of communication for a lot of people. If you're using an iPhone or an iPad, then Apple's pre-installed mail app can seem good enough, but it is certainly not the best email client available on the App Store. If you want advanced features such as smart folder organisation or the ability to filter by attachment type, you're in luck. Read on to see which of our favourite mail apps will suit you the most.
Mailbox
Free (iPhone and iPad, Universal app)
If you like swipe gestures, then you might find Mailbox's UI appealing. If your inbox has several mails and you can never hope to have it empty, Mailbox shows you a few ways to get to inbox zero. You can archive all messages, all except unread or all except starred mails. You can automatically send emails to various lists (such as bills, tickets, etc.), make the app remind you to read certain emails at certain times, send them to archive or trash folders. Just create auto-swipe rules and the app takes care of the rest.
For instance, if you want to automatically send all your phone bills to a folder, long-swipe left (until you see a brown list icon) and hold it until you see an arrow encircle the list icon. You can select whether you want all emails from the sender's address to go to the list, or if you want all emails sent to your email to go there.
Mailbox is great, but it isn't perfect. For starters, it doesn't let you save drafts or sort multiple messages at once. It also doesn't let you mark mail as spam.
Mailbox.jpg
Cloudmagic
Rs. 620 (iPhone and iPad, Universal app)
This is the app of choice for productivity. If you have multiple email accounts across services, then Cloudmagic may be the best email app for you. It supports Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, Exchange, Office 365, iCloud and IMAP. That's likely enough to support services used by most people. This app has a passcode lock feature to help you keep emails private. Cloudmagic lets you swipe towards the left on any conversation to delete or archive mails, apart from marking them unread or read. The app uses thin fonts which give it an elegant touch.
What really differentiates this app from the rest is the integration of "Cards". The app supports certain services and lets you perform actions such as creating notes in Evernote or saving links to Pocket, all from within Cloudmagic itself. Open any email and tap the Cards button at the top to choose which services you want to integrate. One shortcoming is that you can't mark mail as spam.

Boxer
Free (one account - iPhone and iPad, Universal app)
Rs. 620 (Multiple accounts - iPhone and iPad, Universal app)
If you are looking for an app that hits the middle ground between Cloudmagic's power user features and Mailbox's ease of use, then Boxer may just be the right email app for you. It is gesture-friendly and has very handy quick-reply tools to help you clear your inbox. The app lets you "like" emails too, which means that the app sends an email that says you "liked the message using Boxer". It can be a quick way of saying you've read the email and that it's nice. You can also create template responses such as "I'm on it" to save time.
Boxer lets you mark email as spam, which isn't an option in the apps mentioned previously. It has integration with Evernote, Apple's Calendar app, supports Gmail labels and even has a neat to-do list, where you can send emails and the app will ensure that you don't forget them. This app is free but if you want to use multiple accounts, you'll have to shell out Rs. 620 to get the paid version.

Acompli
Free (iPhone only)
All of the apps above are very useful in their own right, but none of them focus on calendar events - a staple feature for Exchange users. If you want a calendar-focussed email app, then Acompli is what you need. Without leaving the app, you can quickly set up a calendar event and send invites to others in your network. Acompli also lets you quickly access all the attachments in your account. You can connect your Google Drive and Dropbox accounts to access even more files and attach them without exiting the Acompli.
That apart, Acompli has another nifty feature up its sleeve - location sharing. This is invaluable for calendar invites and quite useful if you just want to let someone know where you are. This may not be the app power users want, but it is a good option for those who want a fully-featured client for Exchange accounts.

Inboxcube
Free (iPhone only)

Inboxcube steps off the beaten path by focussing on email attachments. If you want to search only for emails with photos or pdf files, this app lets you create "cubes" or quick links to search particular attachment types. When you click on any cube, you get to see all files with that type in a nice two-column layout. For example, tapping a photos cube will show you all the photos in your inbox in a grid layout. You can tap any photo to go to the respective email. Supported cubes include links, starred mails, photos, documents, videos, pdf, Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.
Bonus
While the apps mentioned above should be enough for most people, there are always those who want to try something new. If you are one of them, try these email apps.
Triage
Rs. 120 (iPhone only)
If you want a radically different take on email to go through several emails everyday, try Triage. This app abandons the traditional inbox view and merely shows you one email at a time. It looks like a stack of cards, and you are looking at these from the top. You can quickly read emails, reply and swipe upwards to send them to archive or downwards to keep them in the inbox. That's about all this email app does. It may not sound like much, but Triage can be useful if you want to get rid of non-important mail quickly. It supports Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, iCloud, and IMAP.

Dispatch
Rs. 300 (iPhone and iPad, Universal app)
This app has almost all of Boxer's features, coupled with integration with a few more third-party services. Two of Dispatch's standout features are an unsubscribe triage and snippets (quick reply). The unsubscribe feature helps you find the unsubscribe link and lets you stop those emails without leaving the Dispatch app. Quick reply helps you quickly type template replies such as "I'm running late".
Dispatch also lets you quickly perform tasks with apps such as Evernote, Fantastical, etc. If you rely on any of these apps for productivity, Dispatch might just save you a lot of time. And yes, it does support gesture-based navigation a la Mailbox, enabling you to 'dispatch' mails quickly.

Cloudmagic

If You Use Facebook At All, You’ve Been Experimented On

Are you a regular Facebooker? Have you used it at all? Even a little bit? Maybe you are a faithful, every day (multiple times a day, of course) user, or maybe you only log on a couple times a week at most just to see what’s going on with all of your “friends”. Whatever the case, however much or however little you use Facebook, one thing seems to be true: at some point or another you have been part of some kind of Facebook experiment. In other words, without you even knowing about it, you’ve been a test subject for Facebook. You’ve been a lab rat, and you haven’t even seen the spinning wheel they had you running on while the powers that be watched you and compiled notes for discussion later.
Now, the big “experiment” that’s recently been revealed concerns Facebook’s manipulation of several thousand news feeds over a week period a couple years ago. Facebook wanted to see what people would do if they saw only positive news stories vs. if they saw only negative stories. While that may not sound like a huge deal, there are a lot of people who are now upset about it because they had no idea they were part of any kind of an experiment.

If You Use Facebook At All, You've Been Experimented On
Now, before everyone freaks out wondering what kind of testing they’ve been a part of, we should all probably take a collective deep breath and calm down for a moment.
A former data scientist for Facebook, Andrew Ledvina, worked for the social media giant until 2014. He talked to a reporter and let loose some things he probably wishes he would’ve kept to himself for a little longer. Here was the big one for me: “Experiments are run on every user at some point in their tenure on the site.”
What are those experiments? They’re probably not as earth shattering as the news feed manipulation story, but they consist of little things such as various text sizes, ads, and different buttons, etc.
But here’s the thing – every single user (according to the ex-employee) has been part of an experiment at some time or another. Maybe it was a small one, like the above examples, or maybe it was a big one. But how will they ever know? They probably won’t.
What are your thoughts? Are you okay with being part of Facebook’s endless experiments?

RAM Can’t be Upgraded On New iMac

Earlier this week Techbeat reported that Apple released a brand new 21 and 27 inch iMac that was $200 cheaper than more expensive models. While that sounds like a great deal (who doesn’t like to save a couple hundred bucks?!) it turns out that these new, cheaper iMacs suffer from a couple of potential deal-breakers. While they’re fine for desktop users who just need a “basic” computer, more advanced users may find themselves frustrated with their lack of options.
Macs have been renowned for years because of all of their different upgradeability options. Want to upgrade the hard drive? No problem. Want to upgrade the RAM? No big deal! But that unfortunately is not the case with Apple’s new lineup of cheaper iMacs.

RAM Can't be Upgraded On New iMac
As it stands now, users are forever stuck with the 8GB of RAM that the iMac ships out with. Other World Computers (a Mac reseller) obtained one of the computers and wasted no time at all in talking it all apart to see how it ticked. They discovered that its RAM was completely soldered onto it and was unremovable. This may prove to be a major problem for those Mac users who like to be able to upgrade their computers as much as possible.
Indeed, it seems the only upgradeable option with these new iMacs is the hard drive, which can be upped to 256GB.
What do you think? Is this a deal-breaker for you?
