Assassin's Creed Unity Review: An Almost Perfect Past

You know the French Revolution had a profound impact when every history textbook makes it a staple feature. Though history was never our strong suit, we do recall the French being on the cutting edge of technology, what with their clean, efficient guillotine killings.
One of history's bloodiest chapters makes for a more than interesting setting for Assassin's Creed Unity, the latest entry in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure open world video game series, minus, thankfully the painfully bad puns. Read on to find out how.
Viva la revolution
Assassin's Creed Unity has you in the role of an assassin, Arno Dorian as you parkour, slide, and skulk across France. Along the way you'll meet a host of intriguing characters (both historical and fictional) and of course, end the lives of many foes in the most gruesome fashion. All the while, you get to take in the sights and sounds of a country in the throes of anarchy.
ubisoft_assassins_creed_unity_combat.jpg
And what a sight it is. Whether you're walking through a Parisian street or free-running on the rooftops of Versailles, Unity's world is immersive. Unlike other open world affairs such as Infamous: Second Son, it doesn't feel like a ghost town. Assassin's Creed Unity is teeming with life with realistic crowds that take on a life of their own. A heady mix of angry peasants, snooty bourgeois, and antsy guards all come together in a fashion that convincingly portrays an atmosphere of revolt and protest. It's almost palpable. This attention to detail makes the game's atmosphere and world its greatest strengths.
Aside from making Unity captivating, social stealth is a viable option, allowing you to slip into crowds unnoticed. You could do it in earlier games as well but the sheer number of people on screen make it all the more easier. It also opens up more options in terms of traversal. Can't shake off annoying guards? Simply slip into a building. Almost every structure can be entered, allowing you to a greater sense of flexibility in approaching a mission.
Mission possible
In Assassin's Creed Unity's single-player campaign that lasts around 20 hours or so, you'll traipse around cathedrals, lurk through Parisian sewers, sneak across graveyards and infiltrate palaces. The missions themselves are varied. They range from the usual tailing and eavesdropping of targets to solving murders. Coupled with a well paced plot and you have very little reason to put the controller down.

However new locales, an assortment of missions, and slick presentation alone don't make Unity a joy to play. The controls appear to have undergone a series of subtle enhancements, the biggest of which is - finally - the ability to crouch. It took Ubisoft just eight mainline entries in the series and almost double the number of spin-offs to make it possible.
ubisoft_assassins_creed_unity_gun.jpg
Having said that, it's a welcome addition in keeping yourself out of sight from the game's many enemies. Do snipers on the terrace have a bead on you? Simply crouch behind barrels instead of running like away like you would in previous entries in the series. Old timers would find it easy to use and especially useful in constrained quarters.
Also new is the last known position system, borrowed from the Splinter Cell series - a silhouette of Arno indicates the last position you were seen at by enemies, the one they'll converge on in an attempt to find you.
Mortal combat
Combat has also been rehauled. For one, it isn't as easy as the earlier games. You can no longer simply unleash hell on a squad of soldiers in your way and hope to get away with it. Anything but. At the most, tackling two or three of enemies at once is possible. Anything more becomes a nightmare.
ubisoft_assassins_creed_unity_roof.jpg
This is because the AI is aware of its numerical strength and uses it against you. Rather than have foes attacking you one at a time, they use their numbers and even distance to an advantage. So a group of four soldiers would probably have one or two at a distance using pistols or rifles, while the remainder would come up close with swords or pikes.
Furthermore, combat feels a lot more agile that what we're used to. This is in no small part thanks to smoother animations and swordplay that's responsive. Gone is the series' staple counter kill. In its place is a parry system that borrows from Japanese hack-and-slash masterpieces such as Bayonetta. If you manage to parry an enemy strike at the very last moment you can turn it into a counter-attack. All of this results in combat that rewards skill rather than button mashing.
Compared to earlier games in the series, the changes to combat allow players to explore the game's stealthier options, making it the preferred way to play in our opinion, though your mileage may vary.
ubisoft_assassins_creed_unity_sword.jpg
Freedom of progression
Instead of holding your hand and guiding you to a target, you can execute your target in a multitude of ways. From creating diversions such as leading a revolt of beggars, to disguising yourself as a henchman, to entering restricted areas undetected, the choices are aplenty. It's this sense of freedom and emergent gameplay that makes Unity a welcome change from earlier games in the series.
Thankfully absent are the series' many instant-fail scenarios. If you fail objectives such as tailing a target within a time limit, you aren't forced to try your hand at it again. In its stead the objective evolves, so you'll now have to chase down your target. Even if your target dies, you can still progress to the next mission except it would be tougher. This adaptive design sensibility makes for a game that's more fun compared to its predecessors, which often left us wanting to break our head against the wall.

The good, the bad, and the glitchy
In the run up to the game's release much had been said about its technical prowess or lack thereof. From a visual standpoint, Unity is a treat to play. Yes, this extends to the Xbox One version that we've played. It looks rather good. Nonetheless it is plagued by a few issues.
Run down the streets of Paris and you'll see some buildings and parts of the crowd popping up at the very last moment. Similarly, climbing some of the game's grander structures results in a very visible frame drop.
Luckily, these are few and far between. For most part, Unity looks and plays the part of a grand, open world adventure with aplomb.
Verdict
For a series that's tackled colonial America, the high seas, and the Italian renaissance, Assassin's Creed Unity manages to keep it fresh. It has enough going for it to make it worth a purchase for the discerning gamer who may or may not still be suffering from the trauma of rote learning every detail of the French Revolution for academic purposes. Well worth the price of admission, and then some.
Price: Rs. 1,799 on PC, Rs. 3,499 on PS4 and Xbox One.

Electronic Arts might unveil the next instalment of Mirror's Edge, part of six new titles, at the upcoming E3 2014 event. The firm is also said to have revealed the new project that is being worked upon by its division, Criterion Games.
The news comes from Spike's All Access Live Show schedule which states "Live from the Shine Exposition Center, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson reveals Battlefield: Hardline and world premieres nearly a half-dozen new games, including updates on Mirror's Edge, Dragon Age: Inquisition, a new project from Criterion Games, and much more."
The same was hinted last month by Spike correspondent Geoff Keighley via his Twitter post stating that "EA World Premiere at E3 coming live to Spike TV on June 9, 1 hour press conference with six new game reveals as part of our E3 All Access."

Additionally, the "update on Mirror's Edge" video game is probably the unveiling of Mirror's Edge 2, which was teased last year by the game's senior producer Sara Jansson at E3 2013, "This new game will be a first-person action adventure starring Faith and I am here to tell you that we will stay true to Mirror's Edge," she said as per Polygon.
Some of the additional details that were mentioned for Mirror's Edge 2 to arrive on Xbox One,PlayStation 4 and PC. "We are still in early stages of development and we don't want to rush anything," she added. "We want to make sure we create an experience that lives up to high expectations and fully takes advantage of the next generation of systems."
Electronic Arts is also said to introduce The Sims 4 and Battlefield: Hardline at the E3 event. The EA World Premier event is scheduled for June 9.
While we wait for the reveal, you can get a little taste of what's to come from last year's E3 announcement trailer of Mirror's Edge 2.

Watch Dogs Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance

Set in an alternate reality techno-dystopian Chicago, Watch Dogs hit every gamer's holiday wishlist after appearing at E3 2012. The open world hackfest wowed onlookers with its urban stealth action and its seemingly 'next-gen' graphics. Unfortunately, a month before its November 2013 release the game was delayed for another six months -- the short-term blowout of which caused Ubisoft's stock to drop some 40%.

Being a long-term company with a long-term vision, Ubisoft says Watch Dogs is a long-term play and so it was postponed because it simply wasn't ready. That's commendable considering how often games are released in an unfinished state just to meet deadlines and make sales. Battlefield 4, for example, was among the buggiest blockbusters to ship in recent memory yet it grossed well over $200 million dollars last year.
Making a bad first impression wouldn't have been the smartest way to begin a new franchise, especially when the alternative is having fans wait two quarters. However, with that extra development time and nearly two years having passed since the game was unveiled, many people are wondering if Watch Dogs can live up to the hype.
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the same group behind Assassins Creed, Watch Dogs has been built by the studio's new 'Disrupt' engine, which was mostly constructed from scratch but includes parts of AnvilNext and Dunia, two Ubisoft engines used in the Assassin's Creed series as well as Far Cry 2 and 3. Specifically, Disrupt's open world city management comes from AnvilNext while its vegetation and AI are from Dunia.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding Watch Dog's graphics approaching its launch but it appears to have been based on a few videos, not firsthand gameplay. Some gamers believe Watch Dogs looked better back in the 2012 E3 trailer versus more recent gameplay trailers or the graphics seen in the beta, but the former used console gameplay instead of PC and the latter was downgraded to reduce the size of the download.

Whatever the case is or was, the game looks amazing when set to ultra on the PC. The visuals are spectacular and I found myself often being drawn away from the gameplay to admire how great it all looked. Before we dive in, it's worth noting that we're also taking this opportunity to look at the latest round of R9 200 series cards from HIS, which are factory-overclocked and outfitted with the company's custom coolers.

Testing Methodology

For testing, we settled at the first save point once Aiden Pearce reaches his hide out and takes a well-deserved nap. Wakened from his slumber, he surveys the area around the hideout for criminals. We started the benchmark when we opened the door to leave.
The first half of the benchmark is a rendered scene where the perimeter of the hideout is viewed from fixed cameras and then we take a 45-second walk before the test ends at 90 seconds.
We used Fraps to record the average frame rate and the game was tested at three resolutions (1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 2560x1600) and two quality settings (Ultra with Temporal SMAA and High with FXAA) across 31 different graphics cards and 20 processors. The latest AMD and Nvidia GPU drivers were used in all tests.

Reviews Of Titanfall Game

Titanfall.jpg

Titanfall is the first game released by Respawn Entertainment, a company made up of people from the team behind the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games, Infinity Ward. After parting ways amidst controversy from Activision, the former Infinity Ward developers formed Respawn and worked with Electronic Arts to release their new game. EA in turn had long been looking for a game that could successfully compete with the Call of Duty franchise, and the talent and money behind this game left little doubt that the final product would be something special.

If you were a fan of Call of Duty's chaotic multiplayer deathmatches, then Titanfall is a great new game to move to, but there's a catch - the game only has multiplayer modes, without a single player campaign that you can play offline.

What do you do when the best game in recent times comes with the one "feature" that makes you avoid a game entirely? Simple, you grit your teeth, check your FUP, and start playing already because even as a multiplayer-only game, Titanfall is something that's amazing.

There are two aspects to the game - you start off as a squishy human (a "pilot", in the game's jargon) who can run and gun with the best of them. In fact, just moving as a pilot feels amazing as you parkour your way quickly across the map, wall running and climbing past obstacles that would've stopped all progress in other games.
titanfall1.jpg

Also see How To Create Android Apps for Free Without Coding

The freedom of movement is matched by a good selection of weapons. There's nothing particularly unique here - the same balance of close up and long range guns that you'd find in most games. But Respawn's developers know that you have to make the most repetitive actions the most enjoyable ones, and so running and gunning is pure joy, thanks to the excellent sound, recoil and handling. Add to that the smart pistol - keeping people in your targeting reticle "locks" onto them, and you get an experience where your movement trumps aiming, encouraging fluid shifts in the battlefield.

The twist comes from the eponymous Titans - these giant robots are armoured and hard to kill, packed with a huge array of weapons, and when they come into play, they completely change the dynamics of the game.

The games are 6 vs 6 matches, where you start off with just the pilots in the map. This sounds a little sparse, but there are also AI controlled opponents, some basic grunts called Marvins and the slightly more dangerous Spectres. Killing these gets you points that reduces the time required to call in your Titan.

Robot warfare

Everyone gets a Titan, but you can upgrade your mech and also unlock new types of Titans, to choose ones that suit your particular playing style. These walking tanks really open up a lot of different options, and you don't need to be sitting in your Titan either - you can set it to patrol automatically, while you run around flanking enemies.
titanfall2.jpg

Also see Four Best Apps Mobile Photographers Must Have With Them

There are some great moments in gameplay that emerge from this arrangement - the asymmetric nature of fighting between a Titan and a pilot can be intense, and there can be amazing moments such as climbing onto the back of an enemy Titan and blowing it to bits.

It helps that everything looks great. Titanfall's visuals aren't the sharpest and most detailed in the market, but there's such a coherent sense of design that it's hard not to marvel at the game. The maps are detailed and the Titans themselves look amazing.

Or you could have a moment where you call down your Titan a little late, and drop it right on the heads of your enemies. The handling of the Titans is as well thought out and executed as that of the pilots - the giant mechs can't access all the areas that a pilot can get to and they won't move as fluidly, but it's still an incredible amount of fun to walk around and blast away, and Titan battles are intense.

Online only

The catch is that the matches themselves quickly become repetitive - with small team sizes, there's only so much that can happen in each game, and while the gameplay loop is very satisfying, there's never a feeling of building up to something.

titanfall3.jpg
The first Modern Warfare might be most famous for its multiplayer, but Infinity Ward also delivered an incredibly polished single player campaign, with some amazing narrative moments. Later games in the series focused on the bombast more than anything else, but Titanfall's world is richly drawn, and its art and design practically beg for a strong single player campaign.

Instead, there are two multiplayer campaigns, which play out like the regular multiplayer games, and there's really much incentive to keep playing the campaign, except for the fact that completing it unlocks a Titan.

Other game modes include Attrition (deathmatch), Capture the Flag, Hardpoint (fighting for control of three points on the map) and since you want to rack up experience and call your Titan down quickly, all play fairly similarly. Last Titan Standing starts you off in your Titan and has only one life per round, which changes things up a little, but there's no way to play offline at all, which is very disappointing.

The verdict

The game is an incredible achievement, and manages to be a lot of fun. It's fairly forgiving and while higher level players have a bigger variety of weapons to choose from, catching up doesn't take too long.
titanfall4.jpg

Titanfall plays remarkably fluidly, but there can be some problems with lag. With a ping in the lower double digits, there were still times where people I couldn't see were eviscerating me. It's not always like that, but that makes the times where lag causes problems feel even worse.

If you've got a gaming computer and a fast connection, Titanfall delivers an amazing experience. If you played Call of Duty multiplayer games, then the game can not be missed. But if you want any meaningful story, or a campaign you can play through with friends, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Price: Rs. 3,499 (PC)
