Facebook's Internet.org Comes to India: Everything You Need to Know

Reliance Communications and Facebook announced on Tuesday that the two are bringing free access to several websites for Reliance's mobile users via Internet.org. During the event, Gurdeep Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer Business, Reliance Communications said the goal is to deliver "zero bandwidth content" and the speeds are dependent on the user's phone as well as the kind of connection they have (2G or 3G). From Reliance's end, networks in the launch circles have been strengthened and Internet.org ensures that the destination site is as light on bandwidth as possible.

At the event marking its announcement we got to check out how the service works and it left as feeling there's a lot to be desired. Here's everything you need to know about Internet.org in India.

Who is this for?

To use Internet.org you have to have to be a Reliance Communications customer in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Chennai, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, or Kerala. While all Reliance customers in these circles can use it, the target audience is people without data plans - over 70 percent of mobile phone users in India, according to Singh. The idea is that this population can either not afford Internet access or don't realise what Internet can do for them, and hence don't have a data connection. Internet.org can address both these concerns.

The company plans to roll out Internet.org to Reliance Communications users across the country in the next 90 days.

menu_smartphone_internetdotorg.jpg

"It acts as a great lever at the point of sale, it is far more consumer friendly, network friendly, and it's a win-win for all," Singh said. Our time using Internet.org wasn't very consumer friendly, but the free access should still bring a lot of people on-board - to at least try out the Internet for the first time.

How does it work?

Internet.org gives Reliance Communications customers free access to 40 sites, which includes Wikipedia and WikiHow, various news sites, some e-commerce sites, and of course, Facebook and Facebook Messenger. To access these sites for free, Reliance users need to log onto Internet.org from their phones using either Opera Mini or UC Browser for Internet.org. While these browsers come preloaded on many low-end smartphones, the kind Facebook and Reliance are targeting with Internet.org, you have to wonder how those with the stock Android browser are supposed to use the service. Reliance users can also call 1800-300-25353 (toll-free) and be greeted by a voice menu that will send the URL of the service they wish to use to their phone via SMS.

If you're on an Android device, you can also access the 'whitelisted' sites via the Internet.org app - there's no app for iOS or Windows Phone yet. If you try to access a site that isn't a partner with Internet.org, you're charged for the data used. So, for example, a Bing search can be used to look up information, but opening one of the search results will cost you money. You are given a warning before leaving free access.

If you are not a Reliance Communications customer in the above-mentioned circles, visiting Internet.org just gives you an error message, and a nudge to buy a SIM from Reliance.

Leaving free access

You are taken to a page that explicitly asks you if you want to continue browsing, warning you that you will incur charges on the data plan the phone is under currently. And if it is not on a data plan, you can purchases several packs listed on the page itself. Interestingly, while Twitter is not a partner with Internet.org, we saw a 15 day Facebook pack for Rs. 15, and a 1 day data pack for Rs. 9 which included 1GB of 2G data, and unlimited access to Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

leaving_smartphone_internetdotorg.jpg

A mixed bag of sites

As for the sites that promise free data usage, news, health and social welfare made up the biggest categories, so your need for news and malaria prevention are taken care of. Most of the categories available make a lot of sense, be it search (via Bing) or Sports (ESPN Cricinfo). What's interesting though are the choices of some of the sites themselves. For instance, there's no presence of e-commerce sites, barring Olx and Cleartrip. There is no Flipkart, Amazon, or MakeMyTrip. These may not be sites visited by the intended audience but how many people using Internet.org will buy air tickets from Cleartrip?

Internet.org has also apparently deemed that the next billion accessing the Web don't need email, and can use Facebook Messenger instead. While Facebook claims to be all for net neutrality, it's the selection of services on display that make its claims questionable.

"I think that the principles of net neutrality are around pro-access. And the principles of Internet.org are pro-access as well," says Chris Daniels, Vice-President of Internet.org at Facebook. "The thing that we're trying to do is bring access to many more people through Internet.org. So I see that the philosophies of this and net neutrality are entirely aligned." Daniels does not agree when we say that there is a conflict here, as Facebook is essentially restricting access by offering only specific services for free.

"I don't see the conflict there actually, the net neutrality discussion today really focusses on the people who are already online," Daniels says. "And what it needs is to also do is be inclusive of the people who are not online. So bringing more people online we view as pro-access, right in line with the principles of net neutrality as well."

smartphone_page_load_internetdotorg.jpg

With Internet.org rolling out today in seven circles, and both Reliance and Facebook also keeping mum on key issues such as which parties are paying for the bandwidth.

The privilege of power brokers

In the past, Facebook has tied up with other operators such as Airtel to bring Facebook for free via 0.facebook.com. Facebook has also tied up with Airtel in regions of Africa, but for India, the company's placed its bet on Reliance.

"When Mark [Zuckerberg] was here in October we met with the team at Reliance," says Daniels, "and we found that we shared the same vision, we shared the same passion, not about just bringing people connectivity, but more importantly bringing the benefits in people's lives that connectivity can deliver."

This move puts Reliance in a very enviable position of a powerbroker for a host of Internet-driven businesses and violates net neutrality and "pro-access" that Facebook apparently believes in. Given that the people usually gravitate towards anything free - even at expense of user experience and functionality in most cases such as this - we doubt that many would complain.

For Internet.org to truly become as transformative as Facebook claims or wants, it needs to include a much wider selection of sites, and include access to its competitors. For now, its goals are not clear - for example, we asked Daniels what happens after a number of people are on-board. Is the goal to transform them into paying Internet users who access the open Web? He however stresses that the goal right now is simply to bring people access to useful content, and that these questions will be answered over time.

Swatch's Android-Compatible Smartwatch Won't Require Charging: CEO

swatch_testa_di_toro.jpg
Swatch, one of the world's biggest watchmakers, is planning to take on the upcoming Apple Watch launching its own smartwatch in roughly the same time-frame - within the next 90 days. The Apple Watch will begin shipping in April.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said the smartwatch would rely on NFC to connect with smartphones, and that it would be compatible with Android and Windows software. For now, there is no indication of whether the smartwatch would be compatible with iPhones.

While the specifications of the Swatch's smartwatch are still a mystery, its Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek stated that the Internet-connected wearable would not have to be charged. This might be a huge plus point for the company, as all smartwatches from major manufacturers till date, including the upcoming Apple Watch, need to be charged separately. Some, like the Apple Watch, need to be charged daily.

Bloomberg says Swatch has much experience with smartwatch-related technology, which includes long-lasting batteries. Swatch's sub-brand Tissot has been making touchscreen watches since 1999.

Swatch is also said to be competing with Apple on the grounds of mobile payment system, Apple Pay. As per the report, Swatch is in talks with Switzerland's two largest retailers, named Migros and Coop, for its mobile payment system. However, the Cupertino firm seems to be strides ahead of its Swiss competitor, with Apple Pay having seen much adoption across retailers and banks already since its launch in September.

Rest assured, with both the tech giant and a major watchmaker releasing their smartwatches, the months of April and May will definitely be the most important months this year in the wearable-tech industry.

Motorola Moto E (Gen 2) Leaked in Images; Expected to Launch at MWC

Motorola last year launched the successors to the Moto G and Moto X smartphones, but left the immensely popular Moto E waiting for an upgrade. Of course, rumours for a while have been pointing towards Motorola working on the successor to the Moto E, expected to be called the Moto E (Gen 2).
Now, Android Police has posted a couple of press images of the alleged Moto E (Gen 2), showing the front and rear panels of the device with the display turned on. The leaked front panel purportedly shows the Moto E's successor might pack a larger screen than its predecessor; though seems will not match to the 5-inch display on the second-generation Moto G.

Another notable feature given out by the leaked image is that the Moto E will run Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box. Further, the front leaked image purportedly shows the handset running single SIM tipping that the handset might come in two variants - single SIM and dual-SIM - unlike the first generation which was only available in a dual-SIM model. The dual-front speaker grille design first seen on the Moto E last year seems to have been changed on the Moto E (Gen 2) as it is seen sporting a single speaker grille above the display.

Android Police points out few more additions expected in the second-generation Moto E, "It does look like the Moto E has picked up a secondary noise-cancelling microphone on the rear cover. It's also gaining, it would seem, a front-facing camera."

The publication also speculates that the Motorola Moto E (Gen 2) might be announced at the sidelines of MWC in Barcelona in March. So far, there has been no announcement from the company.

Some of the preliminary specifications of the Moto E (Gen 2) tipped by previous reports include a 4.5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) display; a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and LTE connectivity. Earlier reports have also tipped the new Moto E might carry a "very low price".

Lenovo A6000's First Sale Sees 10,000 Units Go Out of Stock in 2 Seconds

Lenovo's A6000 4G-enabled smartphone went up on its first sale on Wednesday via Flipkart and the company announced it took just two seconds for the smartphone to be listed as 'out of stock'.
The company announced that 10,000 Lenovo A6000 phones were up for sale. Notably, Lenovo earlier had not revealed the total number of units going on sale on Wednesday via Flipkart. The company announced the news via its official Lenovo India Twitter account.

Lenovo also confirmed that the registrations for the second sale of the Lenovo A6000 will begin on Wednesday at 6pm IST.

With just 10,000 units up for grabs, the Lenovo A6000 was clearly in heavy demand and saw some steep reactions from consumers on social platforms. Lenovo after its sale faced mixed reactions on Twitter. One of the users even compared the Lenovo's sales model to Xiaomi.

To refresh, Lenovo's pricing for the Lenovo A6000 significantly undercuts the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G - which sells at Rs. 9,999 - and Micromax's Yu Yureka - which is priced at Rs. 8,999. The smartphone arguably however, is not as well-endowed as its rivals' counterparts, and may just be positioned to take on Xiaomi's recently unveiled Redmi 2 smartphone.

The Lenovo A6000 is compatible with the Band 3 and Band 40 (TDD-LTE) 4G networks used in India. It features a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS display, which is smaller than the 5.5-inch display on both Micromax's Yu Yureka and Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4G. The dual-SIM smartphone supports Micro-SIM cards.

lenovo_a6000_back_official.jpg

The A6000 is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) SoC clocked at 1.2GHz coupled with 1GB of RAM. The Android 4.4 KitKat-based smartphone runs Lenovo's Vibe UI 2.0 skin on top, and bears 8GB of built-in storage with no word on expandability. An Android 5.0 Lollipop update has been promised, but no time-frame announced.

Other specifications include an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash; a 2-megapixel front camera; apart from a 2300mAh battery rated to deliver up to 13 hours of talk time and up to 264 hours of standby time on 3G networks. The Lenovo A6000 measures 141x70x8.2mm and weighs 128 grams.

WhatSim Lets You Use WhatsApp for Free While Roaming Worldwide

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging services worldwide, with the company recently announcing 700 million monthly active users. Now, in an attempt to woo the large WhatsApp user base, an Italian company has launched WhatSim, a WhatsApp-only SIM that comes with a plan that will let you use the popular messaging app for free while travelling across about 150 countries.

Manuel Zanella Rngineer, Founder and CEO of Zeromobile, the company behind WhatSim, says, "WhatsApp is the future of mobile communications. Its only "limit" is the data connection especially when you are traveling because the roaming charges are expensive and you can't always find Wi-Fi everywhere and it is not always free. As someone who appreciates and uses WhatsApp, I tried to figure out how to get around this problem. That's why WhatSim is an extraordinary opportunity for WhatsApp."

whatsim_press_image.jpg

For EUR 10 (approximately Rs. 714), users will get a SIM card (standard worldwide shipping is EUR 5 - Rs. 350 approximately) unlimited text messaging for a year. While sending and receiving text messages, location updates, and contacts via WhatsApp is free, users will have to buy credits for sharing multimedia messages such as photos, videos, and voice messages. How much you get for your credits depends on where you are travelling.

Zanella further explains, "The solution we have developed is simple and intuitive. With €5 you get 1000 credits that you can use, for instance, to exchange 50 photos or 10 videos in many countries around the world. There are no limits to sharing your position and contacts. This way we guarantee the utmost transparency. Buying a recharge is quick and easy: just go to our website even from your smartphone and soon even from a dedicated app."

WhatSim is available to buy via the WhatSim website, with the company also planning to make it available via "network of local distributors in over 100 countries."

Of course this is not the first time someone's offering a SIM with unlimited WhatsApp usage, though earlier attempts have been limited to a specific country. Last year, WhatsApp, in partnership with E-Plus, a mobile telecommunications operator in Germany, started selling prepaid SIMs that offered unlimited WhatsApp usage.

iBall on Thursday launched the Windows Phone 8.1-powered Andi 4L Pulse smartphone in India at Rs. 4,999. The phone had been listed on the company site last month, and reportedly went on sale then as well, according to an established retailer.
The iBall Andi 4L Pulse is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) smartphone that runs Windows Phone 8.1 OS out-of-the-box. It features a 4-inch WVGA (480x800 pixels) TFT display.

The Andi 4L Pulse is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 SoC coupled with 512MB of RAM. The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash along with a front-facing camera (unknown pixels). The company says that the Andi 4L Pulse also comes with Microsoft's productivity suite of apps like Office, OneDrive, Xbox, Bing search and more, pre-installed.

The iBall Andi 4L Pulse at Rs. 4,899 is arguably the cheapest Windows Phone handset in India, following the launch of the Celkon Win 400 for Rs. 4,979 and the Lava Iris Win1 at Rs. 4,999.

Last month, the company had launched its first octa-core tablet, the iBall Slide Octa A41 at Rs. 14,999. The first-generation YotaPhone has received yet another price cut in India, making Rs. 10,500 cheaper than its launch price. Exclusively available at Flipkart, the smartphone is now priced at Rs. 12,999.
The dual-display YotaPhone (first-generation) was launched in October last year at Rs. 23,499. As soon as November, the company had slashed the price of YotaPhone to Rs. 17,999.

Yota Devices has launched two smartphones thus far. The first generation YotaPhone was unveiled at CES 2013 though it started shipping only by December 2013. The company upgraded its original dual-screen smartphone at MWC 2014 with the next-generation YotaPhone.

The first-generation YotaPhone features a 4.3-inch HD display; a 4.3-inch E-Ink display with 360x640 pixels resolution; a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, and is based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Other specifications include 2GB of RAM; 32GB inbuilt storage; a 13-megapixel rear camera; a 1-megapixel front camera, and a 1800mAh battery.

Last month, Yota Devices announced the availability details of YotaPhone 2 for the European market. The company revealed that the YotaPhone 2 will go on sale in Russia at RUB 33,000 (approximately Rs. 37,500).

The company further added that the YotaPhone successor will be available in 20 European markets by the end of 2014, and will head to China and rest of Asia Pacific in early 2015.

The YotaPhone 2 features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) AMOLED display offering a pixel density of 442ppi. It sports a 4.7-inch e-paper display with qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution. Notably, the smartphone boasts of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on both the dual-screens.

Other specifications of the YotaPhone 2 include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz; 2GB of RAM; 32GB of in-built storage (non-expandable); an 8-megapixel rear autofocus camera with LED flash; a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera; a 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

How to Switch Off and Turn On iPhone, iPad With a Damaged Power Button

If you're an iPhone or iPad user, then you might not realise just how much you end up using the power on your phone. The home button is essential to navigate through your device, and the use of the volume buttons and the mute switch on the side is pretty obvious too, but if your power button stops working, you can't turn your phone off - or back on again for that matter.

It's also pretty easy to damage, with external factors such as excess humidity or dust that can make it stop working. You can get by without switching off the iOS device, but it is always good to be able to turn the phone off if needed. These simple steps to switch off the device without touching the power button could come in really handy.

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to General > Accessibility.
  • Scroll down to the section labelled INTERACTION and tap on AssistiveTouch.
  • On the next screen, toggle AssistiveTouch to the green On position.
  • A white circle with a grey box will appear on screen. Tap this circle to expand it to a big box on screen.
  • Tap Device.
  • Tap and hold Lock Screen until the red-and-white power icon appears on screen with the text slide to power off next to it.
  • Slide the power icon to the right to switch off the iPhone or iPad.

That takes care of switching the device off, but what do you do if you want to turn it back on? If the power button is damaged, how else can you switch on an iOS device? The answer is - charge the device. Yes, just connect it to a power socket or to a USB port on any computer. The device will turn back on in a few seconds. As soon as the white screen with the Apple logo appears, you can disconnect the charger or USB cable.

WhatsApp Bans whatsapp plus Users for Using Third-Party App

Some users are reporting WhatsApp banned them for 24 hours because they violated the app's 'terms of service' by using a third-party client.
Users are reporting about the ban via different social networks (Facebook, Google+ and Twitter) revealing that the ban is only for those Android users who are using the popular third-party client WhatsApp+ or WhatsApp Plus.

WhatsApp has also pointed out the same reason in their FAQ section, stating, "WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp. The developers of WhatsApp Plus have no relationship to WhatsApp, and we do not support WhatsApp Plus. Please be aware that WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to 3rd parties without your knowledge or authorization."

The company is now asking users to uninstall WhatsApp+ and install an authorised version of WhatsApp from official website or Google Play to reuse the service, although the 24-hour ban period will reportedly remain in effect for the full duration despite replacing or uninstalling the app.

Meanwhile, some purported screenshots of WhatsApp's anticipated official Web client have surfaced online. According to GSMArena, the screenshot images were shared by a Google+ user and were shortly removed.

Though the images don't show a Web client, it is seen that WhatsApp for Android in its settings screen is prompting users to pair the device with a Web browser and a trusted computer for a secure connection.

Two alleged Motorola handsets, the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx, have popped on the Internet, thanks to an online retailer's listings.
Briefly listed on UK retailer Argos website (spotted by GSMArena), the unannounced Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx were listed along with prices. According to the listings, the Moto G Titan is priced at GBP 159.95 (Rs. 15,000 approximately) for the SIM-free version while the Moto E Styx at GBP 109.95 (Rs. 10,300 approximately). Notably, both the smartphones run Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Moto G Titan was listed with a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display; powered by a quad-core processor; 8GB of built-in storage; expandable storage support; 8-megapixel rear camera; 4G LTE support, and 155 grams, as per GSMArena.

Last month, a 4G model of the Moto G (Gen 2) was listed ahead of any official announcement by the company. The recently-leaked LTE (Band 7) supporting variant of the Motorola Moto G (Gen 2) came with similar innards as the Moto G Titan, which tips that Titan might be the codename of the 4G LTE model of the second-generation Moto G.

The Moto E Styx, on the hand, was also listed to support 4G LTE and came with an upgraded quad-core processor, which replaces the dual-core SoC seen on the Moto E. Other innards of the Moto E Styx were similar as the original budget handset, as per GSMArena, indicating that the listed Moto handset might be a 4G LTE variant of the Moto E.

Unfortunately, the listings of the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx were pulled down, so far there has been no word on launch of the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx by Motorola.
