Whatsapp is one of the most popular instant messaging app for mobile devices and as a result is a must-have app for anyone with a smartphone irrespective of the operating system they’re using.
The problem is that some persons, based on their location, they’re unable to access the app to install it on their Android smartphone via the Google Play Store. When they search for the app it shows up with a “unavailable for your country” error (or similar).
Here are two ways of getting around the error and getting the app:
Method 1.
- Download the app directly from Whatsapp’s website (click on this link for the latest version for Android). When the download is complete, tap on the file to install the app.
Method 2.
- Download the file from my Dropbox (click on this link and choose Download to get the file). When the download is complete, tap on the file to install the app.
NB: If you’re downloading the app on your PC, you’ll have to transfer the downloaded file to your smartphone before being able to install/sideload it. If you do not know how to sideload apps on an Android device just scroll down.

Sideloading Apps Explained
Sideloading is a term used to refers to the practice of installing apps (applications) on your mobile device (Android, Blackberry, IOS, Windows Phone) that have not been downloaded from the official apps store for that operating system.
To explain further – If you download an android app from the XDA forums instead of from the official Google’s Play Store, the process of installing it onto your device is sideloading.
For Android and Blackberry sideloading apps is pretty easy to do. For Blackberry you simply download the app file to your phone, then use a file manager app to find it, you then tap or click on the file which in turns invokes the app installer program which will install your app just as if it had come from the trusted App World.
For Android devices it is the same as above, but before you’ll be able to do that you must first allow for the installation of apps from unknown sources (see the figure below).
NB: Some versions of android will have the option to enable unknown sources in settings - Applications.
To sideload on Windows Phone 7 & 8 and IOS, your device must be jailbroken.
Why would you want to sideload apps?
Well, there are several very good reasons:
- You’ll get to use apps that are banned from the official store because they allow you to do things Google or your carrier does not approve of, like Internet sharing on certain carriers
- You’ll get to use apps blocked by your mobile carrier for your specific device
- You’ll get to install carrier exclusives apps on your device
- It is fun to do
