WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging services worldwide, with the company recently announcing 700 million monthly active users. Now, in an attempt to woo the large WhatsApp user base, an Italian company has launched WhatSim, a WhatsApp-only SIM that comes with a plan that will let you use the popular messaging app for free while travelling across about 150 countries.

Manuel Zanella Rngineer, Founder and CEO of Zeromobile, the company behind WhatSim, says, "WhatsApp is the future of mobile communications. Its only "limit" is the data connection especially when you are traveling because the roaming charges are expensive and you can't always find Wi-Fi everywhere and it is not always free. As someone who appreciates and uses WhatsApp, I tried to figure out how to get around this problem. That's why WhatSim is an extraordinary opportunity for WhatsApp."



For EUR 10 (approximately Rs. 714), users will get a SIM card (standard worldwide shipping is EUR 5 - Rs. 350 approximately) unlimited text messaging for a year. While sending and receiving text messages, location updates, and contacts via WhatsApp is free, users will have to buy credits for sharing multimedia messages such as photos, videos, and voice messages. How much you get for your credits depends on where you are travelling.

Zanella further explains, "The solution we have developed is simple and intuitive. With €5 you get 1000 credits that you can use, for instance, to exchange 50 photos or 10 videos in many countries around the world. There are no limits to sharing your position and contacts. This way we guarantee the utmost transparency. Buying a recharge is quick and easy: just go to our website even from your smartphone and soon even from a dedicated app."

WhatSim is available to buy via the WhatSim website, with the company also planning to make it available via "network of local distributors in over 100 countries."

Of course this is not the first time someone's offering a SIM with unlimited WhatsApp usage, though earlier attempts have been limited to a specific country. Last year, WhatsApp, in partnership with E-Plus, a mobile telecommunications operator in Germany, started selling prepaid SIMs that offered unlimited WhatsApp usage.

iBall on Thursday launched the Windows Phone 8.1-powered Andi 4L Pulse smartphone in India at Rs. 4,999. The phone had been listed on the company site last month, and reportedly went on sale then as well, according to an established retailer.
The iBall Andi 4L Pulse is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) smartphone that runs Windows Phone 8.1 OS out-of-the-box. It features a 4-inch WVGA (480x800 pixels) TFT display.

The Andi 4L Pulse is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 SoC coupled with 512MB of RAM. The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash along with a front-facing camera (unknown pixels). The internal storage on the handset is 4GB, which is further expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB).

On the connectivity front, the Andi 4L Pulse includes 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and Micro-USB. The iBall Andi 4L Pulse packs a 1500mAh battery. It measures 113.61x61.00x11.23mm and weighs 96 grams.

The company says that the Andi 4L Pulse also comes with Microsoft's productivity suite of apps like Office, OneDrive, Xbox, Bing search and more, pre-installed.

The iBall Andi 4L Pulse at Rs. 4,899 is arguably the cheapest Windows Phone handset in India, following the launch of the Celkon Win 400 for Rs. 4,979 and the Lava Iris Win1 at Rs. 4,999.

Last month, the company had launched its first octa-core tablet, the iBall Slide Octa A41 at Rs. 14,999. The iBall Slide Octa A41 runs Android 4.4 KitKat and features a 7-inch IPS full-HD (1920x1080 pixels) display with a 323ppi pixel density. It is powered by an unspecified 1.7GHz octa-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor alongside 2GB of RAM. Other specifications of the tablet include an autofocus 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash; a 5-megapixel front-facing camera; 16GB of inbuilt storage that is further expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB), and a 3500mAh battery.

The first-generation YotaPhone has received yet another price cut in India, making Rs. 10,500 cheaper than its launch price. Exclusively available at Flipkart, the smartphone is now priced at Rs. 12,999.
The dual-display YotaPhone (first-generation) was launched in October last year at Rs. 23,499. As soon as November, the company had slashed the price of YotaPhone to Rs. 17,999.

Yota Devices has launched two smartphones thus far. The first generation YotaPhone was unveiled at CES 2013 though it started shipping only by December 2013. The company upgraded its original dual-screen smartphone at MWC 2014 with the next-generation YotaPhone.

The first-generation YotaPhone features a 4.3-inch HD display; a 4.3-inch E-Ink display with 360x640 pixels resolution; a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, and is based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Other specifications include 2GB of RAM; 32GB inbuilt storage; a 13-megapixel rear camera; a 1-megapixel front camera, and a 1800mAh battery.

Last month, Yota Devices announced the availability details of YotaPhone 2 for the European market. The company revealed that the YotaPhone 2 will go on sale in Russia at RUB 33,000 (approximately Rs. 37,500).

The company further added that the YotaPhone successor will be available in 20 European markets by the end of 2014, and will head to China and rest of Asia Pacific in early 2015.

The YotaPhone 2 features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) AMOLED display offering a pixel density of 442ppi. It sports a 4.7-inch e-paper display with qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution. Notably, the smartphone boasts of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on both the dual-screens.

Other specifications of the YotaPhone 2 include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz; 2GB of RAM; 32GB of in-built storage (non-expandable); an 8-megapixel rear autofocus camera with LED flash; a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera; a 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

It's also pretty easy to damage, with external factors such as excess humidity or dust that can make it stop working. You can get by without switching off the iOS device, but it is always good to be able to turn the phone off if needed. These simple steps to switch off the device without touching the power button could come in really handy.

• Open Settings.
• Go to General > Accessibility.
• Scroll down to the section labelled INTERACTION and tap on AssistiveTouch.
• On the next screen, toggle AssistiveTouch to the green On position.
• A white circle with a grey box will appear on screen. Tap this circle to expand it to a big box on screen.
• Tap Device.
• Tap and hold Lock Screen until the red-and-white power icon appears on screen with the text slide to power off next to it.
• Slide the power icon to the right to switch off the iPhone or iPad.

That takes care of switching the device off, but what do you do if you want to turn it back on? If the power button is damaged, how else can you switch on an iOS device? The answer is - charge the device. Yes, just connect it to a power socket or to a USB port on any computer. The device will turn back on in a few seconds. As soon as the white screen with the Apple logo appears, you can disconnect the charger or USB cable.

Some users are reporting WhatsApp banned them for 24 hours because they violated the app's 'terms of service' by using a third-party client.
Users are reporting about the ban via different social networks (Facebook, Google+ and Twitter) revealing that the ban is only for those Android users who are using the popular third-party client WhatsApp+ or WhatsApp Plus.

WhatsApp has also pointed out the same reason in their FAQ section, stating, "WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp. The developers of WhatsApp Plus have no relationship to WhatsApp, and we do not support WhatsApp Plus. Please be aware that WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to 3rd parties without your knowledge or authorization."

The company is now asking users to uninstall WhatsApp+ and install an authorised version of WhatsApp from official website or Google Play to reuse the service, although the 24-hour ban period will reportedly remain in effect for the full duration despite replacing or uninstalling the app.

Meanwhile, some purported screenshots of WhatsApp's anticipated official Web client have surfaced online. According to GSMArena, the screenshot images were shared by a Google+ user and were shortly removed.



Though the images don't show a Web client, it is seen that WhatsApp for Android in its settings screen is prompting users to pair the device with a Web browser and a trusted computer for a secure connection.

Two alleged Motorola handsets, the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx, have popped on the Internet, thanks to an online retailer's listings.
Briefly listed on UK retailer Argos website (spotted by GSMArena), the unannounced Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx were listed along with prices. According to the listings, the Moto G Titan is priced at GBP 159.95 (Rs. 15,000 approximately) for the SIM-free version while the Moto E Styx at GBP 109.95 (Rs. 10,300 approximately). Notably, both the smartphones run Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Moto G Titan was listed with a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display; powered by a quad-core processor; 8GB of built-in storage; expandable storage support; 8-megapixel rear camera; 4G LTE support, and 155 grams, as per GSMArena.

Last month, a 4G model of the Moto G (Gen 2) was listed ahead of any official announcement by the company. The recently-leaked LTE (Band 7) supporting variant of the Motorola Moto G (Gen 2) came with similar innards as the Moto G Titan, which tips that Titan might be the codename of the 4G LTE model of the second-generation Moto G.

The Moto E Styx, on the hand, was also listed to support 4G LTE and came with an upgraded quad-core processor, which replaces the dual-core SoC seen on the Moto E. Other innards of the Moto E Styx were similar as the original budget handset, as per GSMArena, indicating that the listed Moto handset might be a 4G LTE variant of the Moto E.

Unfortunately, the listings of the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx were pulled down, so far there has been no word on launch of the Moto G Titan and Moto E Styx by Motorola.

Google has revealed that Android smartphones and tablets running versions of the software released before 4.3 (Jellybean) will no longer be given official updates to an important part of the software, leaving 939 million devices unsecured, according to IT Pro.

The part of the Android software affected is WebView, which allows apps to display web pages without having to open other applications. Forbes describes the component as “the favored vector for attack for nearly any remote code execution vulnerability in the mobile OS.”

Security researchers discovered that Google was ending support for WebView on earlier versions of Android when attempting to report a bug in the AOSP browser. According to ZDNet, a member of Android’s security team responded by saying: “If the affected version [of WebView] is before 4.4, we generally do not develop the patches ourselves, but welcome patches with the report for consideration. Other than notifying OEMs, we will not be able to take action on any report that is affecting versions before 4.4 that are not accompanied with a patch.”

This means that any bugs found affecting earlier versions of the operating system – which covers around 939 million handsets – will not be fixed by Google. If anyone patches the bugs, Google will incorporate the fixes into the Android Open Source Project code, which is distributed to handset makers, but “that’s where its responsibility stops,” states ZDNet.

The 939 million figure comes from Google’s own numbers on Android version popularity. There is a total of 1.5624 billion Android phones in use, an Google states that 60.1 percent do not run from version 4.4 (KitKat) or later. The latest version of the OS, Lollipop, has so far only been taken up by  0.1 percent of users, but that’s likely to be because most manufacturers and carriers are yet to roll out updates for their handsets and networks.

On Tuesday, Micromax's Yu Yureka smartphone went on sale for the first time and Yu Televentures, a subsidiary of Micromax says it offered 10,000 units for sale via Amazon India. However, it is now being alleged that only 3,000 units were even available, and even fewer were actually sold.

The Yu Yureka is based on the Cyanogen OS, and went on sale exclusively on Amazon India. The company announced early closure of registrations dues to "overwhelming response", claiming over 3 lakh registrations for the flash sale.

After the sale yesterday, it was announced that 10,000 units went out of stock in 3 seconds. The quick close of the sale also generated plenty of negative sentiment online with many prospective buyers turning to Twitter to vent after failing to get their hands on a unit.

One consumer claims to have noticed something which, if true, would mean Yu has misled people.

Blogger Abhay Rana posts that only 3,000 units were available for sale, and that only 2,657 were actually sold. On his blog, Rana shared details about the lightning deal which are available if you invoke Amazon's API, showing that only 3,000 units were available, and only 88 percent were claimed.

Lenovo's answer to the Xiaomi invasion, the A6000 smartphone unveiled at CES 2015, will be launched on Friday, January 16. The company has sent out invites for an event in New Delhi, with an image clearly pointing to the smartphone's 4G LTE capabilities.
The Lenovo A6000 is being targeted to take on 4G LTE offerings in the sub-Rs. 10,000 space, most specifically the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G (now also available via Airtel), and Micromax's Yu Yureka that's due to become available to purchase on January 13. There's no doubt Lenovo's timing is intentional, stealing some steam from the launch of Xiaomi's 'new flagship' unveiling on January 15 - though that is expected to be of the new Mi 5 flagship.

The Chinese consumer electronics giant will like Xiaomi and Micromax also be offering the Lenovo A6000 only for online sales - exclusively via Flipkart, which is also home to the Redmi family. The smartphone announced at CES was given a price tag of $169 (roughly Rs. 10,500), but Flipkart has confirmed the phone will be priced "below Rs. 10,000 in India."

With Lenovo looking to compete with recent launches like Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and Micromax's Yu Yureka, the phone could be priced as low as Rs. 8,999. A Lenovo spokesperson said the A6000 variant showcased at CES 2015 is not compatible with the 2300MHz Band 40 (TDD-LTE) used by India's 4G networks. However, given the company's intention to compete with aforementioned phones, it's likely that the variant launched in India will come with this feature.

The Lenovo A6000 features a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS display, which is smaller than 5.5-inch the display on both Micromax's Yu Yureka and Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4G. The dual-SIM smartphone supports Micro-SIM cards.

The A6000 is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) SoC clocked at 1.2GHz coupled with 1GB of RAM. The Android 4.4 KitKat-based smartphone runs Lenovo's Vibe UI 2.0 skin on top, and bears 8GB of built-in storage with no word on expandability.

Other specifications include an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash; a 2-megapixel front camera; apart from a 2300mAh battery rated to deliver up to 13 hours of talk time and up to 264 hours of standby time on 3G network. The Lenovo A6000 measures 141x70x8.2mm and weighs 128 grams.
