Watch Dogs Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance

Set in an alternate reality techno-dystopian Chicago, Watch Dogs hit every gamer's holiday wishlist after appearing at E3 2012. The open world hackfest wowed onlookers with its urban stealth action and its seemingly 'next-gen' graphics. Unfortunately, a month before its November 2013 release the game was delayed for another six months -- the short-term blowout of which caused Ubisoft's stock to drop some 40%.

Being a long-term company with a long-term vision, Ubisoft says Watch Dogs is a long-term play and so it was postponed because it simply wasn't ready. That's commendable considering how often games are released in an unfinished state just to meet deadlines and make sales. Battlefield 4, for example, was among the buggiest blockbusters to ship in recent memory yet it grossed well over $200 million dollars last year.
Making a bad first impression wouldn't have been the smartest way to begin a new franchise, especially when the alternative is having fans wait two quarters. However, with that extra development time and nearly two years having passed since the game was unveiled, many people are wondering if Watch Dogs can live up to the hype.
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the same group behind Assassins Creed, Watch Dogs has been built by the studio's new 'Disrupt' engine, which was mostly constructed from scratch but includes parts of AnvilNext and Dunia, two Ubisoft engines used in the Assassin's Creed series as well as Far Cry 2 and 3. Specifically, Disrupt's open world city management comes from AnvilNext while its vegetation and AI are from Dunia.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding Watch Dog's graphics approaching its launch but it appears to have been based on a few videos, not firsthand gameplay. Some gamers believe Watch Dogs looked better back in the 2012 E3 trailer versus more recent gameplay trailers or the graphics seen in the beta, but the former used console gameplay instead of PC and the latter was downgraded to reduce the size of the download.

Whatever the case is or was, the game looks amazing when set to ultra on the PC. The visuals are spectacular and I found myself often being drawn away from the gameplay to admire how great it all looked. Before we dive in, it's worth noting that we're also taking this opportunity to look at the latest round of R9 200 series cards from HIS, which are factory-overclocked and outfitted with the company's custom coolers.

Testing Methodology

For testing, we settled at the first save point once Aiden Pearce reaches his hide out and takes a well-deserved nap. Wakened from his slumber, he surveys the area around the hideout for criminals. We started the benchmark when we opened the door to leave.
The first half of the benchmark is a rendered scene where the perimeter of the hideout is viewed from fixed cameras and then we take a 45-second walk before the test ends at 90 seconds.
We used Fraps to record the average frame rate and the game was tested at three resolutions (1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 2560x1600) and two quality settings (Ultra with Temporal SMAA and High with FXAA) across 31 different graphics cards and 20 processors. The latest AMD and Nvidia GPU drivers were used in all tests.

Microsoft Unhappy About Windows XP Update Hack

Still hooked on Microsoft XP for whatever reason? Even though the company has officially said goodbye to the iconic operating system, and the deadline has come and gone, there are still hardcore XP users out there. And when I say hardcore, I mean hardcore – to the point that someone has created a Windows XP updated hack, which provides users a way to get around the lack of support for the operating system.

Also Read How Useful Are Waterproof Smartphones?

How does it work?
It requires a little tweaking of the operating system’s registry. If you change a few lines of code in the registry, the system will think that, instead of running on Windows XP, your computer is a point-of-sale system running Windows Embedded Industry (previously Windows Embedded POSReady). Since this system does still have support – which will not end till 2019 – your computer can then receive updates for years to come.
Naturally, Microsoft is not happy with this development. Obviously, it circumvents their move to stop support for Windows XP, a noisy fight that one was.

Also Read Motorola Launches Smartphone For Under 150USD

More than that, though, Microsoft says that the hack can actually do more harm than good. They issued a statement to ZDNet explaining their position on the issue:

We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

That does make sense, but  if you want to take the risk anyway, you can find the hack and more information from the ZDNet article.

Everything You Need To Know About Android Silver

According to sources Android Silver, Google’s new Android programme,  is going to be a very big thing indeed and will see Google working with multiple firms on multiple devices, rather than one manufacturer and one device. The aim of the programme is to offer a premium Android experience, with participating firms receiving preferential treatment as regards software updates.

Android Silver

Why?

Android Silver will allow Google to ensure that all Android devices have more consistency and quality, so that customers can have the best Android experience possible. For users that will potentially mean that there will be a bigger choice of high-end Android devices at more reasonable prices. These devices will also come free from the annoying bloatware and unwanted apps because manufacturers will have to adhere to Google’s strict specifications, greatly limiting how many non-Google apps can be pre-installed.
Another advantage to the Silver programme will be that it should do away with the long-standing problem of fragmentation that has plagued Android for some time. Rather than varying customer support experiences and software versions, the Silver programme will ensure that customers receive the up to date version of Android and it is rumored that there will be a 24/7 customer support service through Google Hangouts. It is possible that Google will also offer to loan devices to those who have lost or had their devices stolen.

Another motivation for Google is that it is well documented that Samsung plan to eventually drop Android, which could potentially leave Google with a big gap to fill, especially because Google needs users’ data. Silver will allow Google to minimize the damage so to speak, helping firms to better compete with Samsung and who knows, maybe it will make Samsung reconsider its decision.

When?

According to the Twitter account @evleaks, we could be seeing Android Silver by February 2015, the Tweet reads:  “There is no Nexus 6. Farewell, Nexus. Don’t worry, there’s a silver lining to this cloud… Android Silver, circa February 2015.” By doing away with the Nexus brand, Google will be able to improve the overall Android standard and help it gain more control over its unique operating system.
So far LG and Motorola are apparently going to be taking part in the Silver programme but hopefully we will find out more at Google’s annual developers conference, Google I/O, which will be held next month.

Top 5 Hacks For Raspberry Pi – Build R2-D2!

If after reading our guide to Raspberry Pi you decided that Raspberry Pi was the one for you then these projects will act as inspiration, a few ideas as to what you can achieve with your Pi. We’ve selected a variety of projects so there is something for everyone, however if you have already done a project of your own then please share it with us – with photos of your project too if possible!

Digital Picture Frame

Andy Jagoe built a digital picture frame with his Raspberry Pi. It cost him half what it would to buy one from an electrical store and yet has double the features. What I think is a nice touch is that the digital frame doesn’t just display photos but weather reports, music and movies too. The best bit? – It took just a couple of hours to build, so a great project to start with.  You can find full tutorial instructions here, complete with photos to help you along the way.

Mini Mac

At one third of the size of an original Mac, the Mini Mac is the world’s smallest Macintosh. Built to scale and with PVC as well as off-the-shelf PC parts, die hard Apple fan John Leake used his Raspberry Pi as the motherboard and uses Linux to run System 6, which is one of the oldest versions of the Mac OS. The Mini Mac has support for USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi and features a 3.5-inch screen and even a HDMI-out port. Impressive!

Home Media Centre

Linux can run the free media centre program XBMC, so if you combine that with the Raspberry Pi, which runs Raspbian Linux then you can make your very own home media centre. Because XBMC has a great plugin library, you will be able to watch content from Netflix, Amazon Prime and other sources.

R2-D2

This has to be one of the best presents ever. Not only did a Raspberry Pi owner give his girlfriend an R2-D2 robot for Valentine’s day, he actually built it himself. The little robot can recognise and track faces, motion and distance as well as give it commands in both English and Chinese, all thanks to the Raspberry Pi.

Home Automation System

If you have an Arduino as well as a Raspberry Pi, then you could create your very own home automation system. By using a Node.js program, you would be able to monitor and control any device within your home. For example, you could turn lights off or the TV and if you really wanted to get technical, you could even set the Pi to switch off lights when it senses a temperature change. Click on this link for a full guide.

Cat Feeder – Made By A 10 Year Old!

Zeverino cat feeder
Ok so 10-year old Ella Smith did have a little help from her dad but I think it’s fantastic that such a young person is taking an interest in programming. She combined her love of animals, with her love of ‘tinkering’ and created Zeverino, an Arduino-powered cat feeder. The Zevrino consists of an Arduino Uno, Arduino motor controller, DS1307 real-time clock with battery backup, a toggle switch, 2 low-speed motors, and 2 Zevro dry food dispensers.
In the words of Ella: “don’t be afraid to try new things!”

Hoverbikes Will Be Available in 2017!

I’d imagine this is a pretty normal reaction, but ever since I saw the Back To The Future movies when I was a kid, I’ve been waiting for the day when the hoverboard would finally be available. Aside from a pretty awesome spoof a few months back, there’s been no news on that front. Along the same lines, every time I watch Return Of The Jedi, I yearn for the day when those speeder bikes will be released to the market. And while I have no idea if (or when) a hoverboard will ever grace store shelves, I can report that hoverbikes will be available in just a few short years!

While they look nothing like they did in the classic Star Wars movie, they still accomplish the same thing: getting you where you need to go without touching the ground.
Allow me to introduce you to the Aero-X – a real-life hoverbike created by the company Aerofex. While it won’t officially be available for purchase until 2017, there are a few details about the bike that have already been released to the public. First, it can accommodate two people at a time, it will lift you ten feet in the air, and it will travel at a top speed of forty-five MPH. With a full tank, users can expect to ride/hover for about an hour and fifteen minutes before it’ll need a fill-up.
Hoverbikes Will Be Available in 2017!
Even though it can seat two riders, it (as of now) can only support up to 310 pounds, so you might want to make sure you and any riders are in pretty decent shape before you climb aboard. Oh, and before you get excited about buying one of these hoverbikes, you might be curious about the price. Please sit down. It’ll cost you $85,000, on top of a $5,000 deposit you’ll eventually get back.
Seriously – could you imagine owning a hoverbike?
